Alamogordo Plans to Auction Excavated Atari Cartridges

The City of Alamogordo, New Mexico, has decided to auction off over half of the 1,300 vintage 80s-era video game cartridges exhumed earlier this year by a Microsoft-sponsored documentary team.

The Alamogordo City Council voted unanimously this week to offer approximately 800 of the Atari cartridges for sale via eBay and the council’s own website. The cartridges were found as part of an investigation into who dumped the games in a landfill and why, which is set to become a documentary film by Microsoft’s Xbox Entertainment Studios. The cache of games included hundreds of copies of E.T. The Extraterestrial, widely considered to be the worst video game of all time. The city plans to keep the remaining 500 cartridges as mementos to be donated to museums.
