Microsoft is reportedly making serious overtures to buy Mojang AB, the Swedish development company behind Minecraft. According to The Wall Street Journal, the deal is valued at over US$2 billion and could be signed as early as this week.
Minecraft has made history since its first release to the public in 2009. It has sold almost 54 million copies as of June 2014 across all major (and more than a few minor) gaming platforms. Just last week the game launched on PlayStation 4.
Minecraft was officially released in 2011 after a two-year beta period, and remains the studio’s only released game to date. Mojang is also developing tactical role-playing game Scrolls (currently in beta) and collaborating with Oxeye Game Studio on action shooter Cobalt (currently in alpha.) Like Minecraft, both games are available for early access purchase despite their pre-release status.
