Microsoft Officially Owns Minecraft

Minecraft developer Mojang AB’s US$2.5B sale to Microsoft has closed according to Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft’s XBox division:

“It’s official, today we welcome Mojang to the Microsoft Studios family. We’re excited for the possibilities ahead w/ the Minecraft community.”

Microsoft announced its purchase of Mojang in September. Mojang’s founders, including Minecraft creator and studio founder Markus “Notch” Persson, left the studio as part of the acquisition.

Microsoft adds Mojang to a sizeable collection of internal game development studios, including Halo foundry 343 Industries, Gears of War studio Black Tisk, and Forza‘s Turn 10 Studios. Spencer confirmed that Microsoft intends to keep developing Minecraft across all its present platforms, including non-Microsoft platforms such as Android, iOS, and PlayStation.
